As some of you may be aware, I help people trying to get phlebotomy certification online. It is possible for people to schedule the dates of the certification examination on their own. One common question asked by many students is how do I know if I am ready for phlebotomy certification exam or not. We shall look at this particular aspect in today’s post.

Use a good handbook to prepare for theory part of the phlebotomy certification exam

A good place to start is the phlebotomy certification handbook that I had talked about in my post about books for phlebotomy certification examination preparation.  These handbooks have chapter specific question sets. So once you start answering some of the question sets, you will get to know your comfort level with different chapters. Split the chapters into 3 categories 1) chapters that you are very comfortable with 2) chapters that are border line cases and 3) chapters that do not seem to have any idea about. Now start with the chapters in category 2. It will be much more easier to push these borderline cases into the comfortable zone. Only after completing the ones in category 2, you should start with the ones in category 3.

Tips to get ready for the practical session of phlebotomy certification examination

The above will take care of your preparation for the theory part of the examination. How to prepare for the practical session as it is equally important? Go to a local nursing home and request the nurse to do her job under supervision. If you do some procedure wrong then the nurse can always correct you. Try to work with more than one nurse. It will help you avoid a situation where you pick up the wrong way of doing some procedure simply because the nurse does it that way.

There are a number of phlebotomy training institutions that conduct mock tests a month or two before the final examination. Enroll for one of them. The mock examinations will give you even a better idea about your preparedness and more importantly it will help you get familiarized with exam conditions.

Last but not the least, go through the instruction set of the agency that is going to conduct the final examination. Look carefully at the instructions regarding negative marking, ability to comeback to a question that you had left out at the beginning. Another important point that many people tend to miss is the total time of the examination and the number of questions that need to be answered.
